Default Storage Cache?

Are there any places to store equipment, materials, souvenirs, and battle trophies outside of your character's inventory?

Not currently as of last BWE. The community has strongly pushed for one and Anet knows the importance of it. Hopefully it will make it in for release but if not it will almost positively be included in a free content patch.

Right now there's just your inventory made up of your backpack, 2 bags, and a belt.

Here's a somewhat -if not entirely- related post with good info from Gaile in another thread.

The shared account storage system may not be present when we release, but I believe it will be added in one of the updates soon thereafter, if that is the case. While it's certainly of benefit to talk about the backpacks, belts, and bags, I'm sure you'll agree that this whole discussion also needs to keep that important overarcing storage feature as part of what we consider necessary and useful.
What I get from that post and the lack of a storage device is they may opt out of a D2-like stash and instead have a full fledged account storage. Which imo would once again raise the bar, as Anet is so fond of doing.

Here's the thread if you want to discuss the Inventory further.

This was posted on 3-14-05 so it's farily recent and most likely still accurate. I've seen bags sell in Lion's arch for...100-250, honestly I can't remember since they change it so much. I'm not sure if they sell them before that but I imagine they do.

You end up with 45 total inventory spaces btw.

Currently there is no option to tranfer gold from one character to another without a middle man (guild member most likely). I'm fairly certain that will be included in the "account storage" however, so it should be possible in the future. Until then, find someone you trust.

For roleplaying, it's reasonable to limit the character inventories. After all, you can only lug around so much stuff at a time. Maybe the eventual shared storage system will require you to travel to the location of your stash to switch items between your character's inventory and your storage cache?
When I first saw the identification kits for sale. I thought they might allow you to mark your posessions so you could leave them somewhere and retrieve them later. Not a bad idea.

You can buy bags from the outfitters later on in the game.

As for gold transfer, account storage will be ready after release (if not next BWE). So, I'm assuming that it includes gold. It'll only make sense, no?

EDIT: Forgot to add, guild storage is also something that will be implemented.

I feel they should add shared storage in your guild hall.

I believe that feature is now added or being added, each player gets permanent storage in their guild hall.

This will be useful for storing things like weapons that you aren't using so that you can go on missions and gather more resources than if you had to carry your weapons around, then when you have finished doing missions you can trade your weapons in town.

I think the earliest I found storage bags for sale was at the conclusion of the Fort Ranik mission from the war master NPC. (Tydus?)
